Ted Kennedy had a bill in the U.S. Senate to force energy companies into “horizontal divestiture”: a company could be in oil or coal or nuclear but not more than one. Because, of all the major energy companies, Conoco had the largest coal operations, it would have been the most damaged. Our campaign showed the public-policy advantages of an integrated energy company like Conoco: skills in developing one form of energy help develop others. Our campaign helped kill the bill.
